Elections are Over - Let the USCL West Playoffs Begin!

The Arizona Scorpions are coming off their best season ever, having finished on top of the Western Division in regular season play! They now plan to carry that momentum into the Playoffs and onward to a Title Win.

Their first game is against the Seattle Sluggers, a team that they beat 3 to 1 in week 2 of the season. The Scorpions will be playing in the same place, Southern Arizona, with the same player roster as was employed in week 2. Hey! It worked before so why not try it again? However, Seattle has added muscle to board 1 with GM Varuzhan Akobian, 2698, who did not play in the previous match with Arizona. Cozianu and Mikhailuk who played board 1 and 2 previously will now move down to boards 2 and 3, respectively. Seattle's board 4 will remain manned by Michael Wang who lost to Arizona's Nick Thompson last time; they are once again playing with the same colors. It'll be interesting to see if they mix it up this time, or just try to improve on what was played in week 2.

The Sluggers have traditionally been tough competition for the Scorpions and are going all out with their strongest lineup for a first round knockout. This match promises to be one of the most interesting matches of the 2010 USCL Season.

My Prediction: Arizona to win 2.5 to 1.5.

Arizona Scorpions plan to finish Regular Season on a High Note !

The Scorpions face the L.A. Vibe in a rematch of their week 3 encounter, when Arizona won 3.5-0.5. Having already secured their place as 2010 Champions of the USCL Western Division, this is not a critical game for the Scorpions. And the expansion team, Los Angeles, has no hope of playoff spot even with a win. So, we could see a series of quick draws. But, don't count on it. The Scorpions are a proud lot of lads and lasses, so I expect they are playing for a decisive win to finish their season on a High Note!

The only players returning from the week 3 match are the ladies; Amanda Mateer for Arizona and WFM Tatev Abrahamyan for the Vibe. Both are formidable opponents and had better not be taken lightly.

Lev Altounian takes Board 1 this week and should have a win over his opponent Alex Krechetov. Board 2 sees Warren Harper playing White facing off against Tatev - expect a long game ending in a draw here. Michael Casella with White will face Robby Adamson on Board 3 and this could be the decisive game of the match; I'm hoping Robby will out-fox Michael and secure the point for the Scorpions. Finally, on Board 4, Amanda playing White will face Eugene Yanayt who has been playing very good chess lately. I expect Amanda to fight hard but in the end Eugene will find a way to win a point for the Vibe.

Prediction for week 10: Scorpions win 2.5 - 1.5.

Flying high on top of the USCL Western Division, the Scorpions face a formidable group from St. Louis on Wednesday! The Archbishops have stacked their lineup with not one, not two, but THREE GMs! Yikes. Two are above 2700 rating, and by the way on board number one is a guy called - NAKAMURA.

Very Scary and its not even Halloween yet!

Although the Scorpions may be underdogs, they are fielding players with a lot of Heart and Tenacity! And perhaps they will be sporting their best Halloween costumes to give the Archbishops a real scare.

I'm predicting a draw in this one. St. Louis wins board 1 & 2, while Arizona wins board 3 & 4. NO DRAWS!

Time for a Quick Recovery from The Arizona Scorpions.

Ouch! The Scorpions caught fire and got burned pretty badly by the Chicago Blaze last week, suffering their first loss of the year! ROFC.

Arizona hopes to get back on the winning track this week, but they face a dangerous Baltimore team, as the Kingfishers come in as a high rated and tough-to-beat team. What to do?

Somebody said, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going"! So it is with the Scorpions, looking for a quick recovery tonight with a win over Baltimore and resumption of first place in the West!

Danny Rensch moves onto the second Board and is ready to work his magic. And then the young phenom, David Adelberg, bring his youthful energy onto Board 4. With Rogelio leading the way on Board 1 and Warren Harper remaining steady on Board 3, the match should be exciting and go deep into the autumn night. A Hot one in Phoenix where daytime temps are still above 105 deg. F!

Predictions: The Scorpions win a close one by 2.5 to 1.5.

Arizona Scorpions Plan to Extinguish the Blaze and go 5-0 on top of USCL West

It's still Hot in Arizona, over 100 degrees! And the Scorpions aren't about to cool off anytime soon; They face Chicago Blaze on Monday night and expect to just increase the Heat.

With an exciting win (2.5-1.5) last week against the Dallas Destiny, the Scorpions play from Phoenix and use the same lineup on the first three boards as they won with in week one and week three. Using their roster depth on board 4, they keep their opponents guessing as to who they'll play each week; this week, young Nick Thompson gets the assignment.

Chicago, in second place and just behind first place Arizona in the Western Division standings, will have extra incentive as they will be looking to reverse that order on Monday night.

On board 1 Arizona's Barcinilla faces a tough battle against the Blaze's GM, Dmitry Gurevich and he will need some special luck to secure the point. Board 2 has Scorpion, Aldama as the underdog against Florin Felecan. This promises to be the most exciting game of the match with both players looking to employ some "unconventional wisdom" to win. With Rensch versus Young on Board 3 we can expect some more creative play and perhaps a time struggle due to extreme complications in the endgame. Finally, two youngsters face each other on Board 4, both having had success in past USCL games. Arizona's Nick Thompson is a slight underdog to Chicago's Eric Rosen; the result of this game seems to be a tossup and perhaps Fuzzy Thinking will be needed for a win. I expect this game to finish first and set the tone and add pressure to the play on the first three boards.

My Prediction is for Arizona to Win and repeat their last week's score of 2.5-1.5 as they remain atop the USCL Western Division standings!

Arizona Scorpions looking toward a 4-0 Season Start with a win against Dallas!

It's still Hot in Arizona, over 100 degrees! And the Scorpions aren't about to cool off anytime soon.

This week its a rematch against the traditionally strong Dallas Destiny. But destiny seems to have forsaken Dallas in the early season this year and they find themselves near the bottom of the Western Division. Meanwhile, after a great season start and a win (3.5-0.5) last week against startup Los Angeles, the Scorpions are at the top of their Division.-- Yea!

The Scorpions games will include two rematches with Dallas opponents; Robby Adamson with Keaton Kiewra and David Adelberg with Bayaraa Zorigt. I expect an Arizona win on both boards tonight. On board one Levon Altounian will face Destiny's Salvijus Bercys in a tough match with good chances for a draw. Finally, on the second board Dallas brings strength with Julio Sadorra, their highest rated player tonight, against Arizona's Warren Harper. Warren will fight hard, but I see Dallas escaping with a point here.

So, my Prediction is for another Arizona Win by 2.5-1.5 as they remain atop the USCL Western Division standings!

Arizona Scorpions try for a Third Win. Beware Los Angeles!

The Arizona Scorpions have won their first two matches, first on a Wednesday and second on a Monday; this week they try to extend their winning streak on a Tuesday evening. This week, in Phoenix, the Scorpions take on the Los Angeles Vibe, newcomers to the USCL who sport a record of one win and one loss. The Scorpions will use their week 1 lineup on the first 3 boards. On board 4, Amanda Mateer will play her first game of the season against the strong NM, Christian Tanaka.

My prediction for this match is the Vibe will get some beginner's luck and the encounter will end as a draw at 2-2. The lineup for this week's match is:

I predict that this week's match will be very close with the Scorpions biting the Sluggers last and winning 2.5 to 1.5. Giving Arizona a first place in the Western Division!

The Scorpions will bring three new members onto the boards this week, while returning Rogelio Barcenilla who played a tough match on first board last week. This week IM Lev Altounian will man Board 1 against FM Costin Cozianu in what will be a long game ending in a draw. Rogelio will have few surprising turns in his game which allow him to score his first win of the season on Board 2 against another Slugger FM, Slava Mikhailuk. Robby "time trouble" Adamson mans the third Board against WGM Katerina Rohonyan. This looks to be a tough fought battle with both sides playing excellent chess, but finishing in a draw. NM Nick Thompson is on the fourth board for his initial game in the USCL and faces slugger Michael Wang who is also playing his initial USCL game. This game may determine the outcome of the match and if Wang wins could cause the teams to be locked in a draw; but Nick is young and hungry in his first match so I foresee him winning and securing the Match Win for Arizona.

Arizona Upsets Miami in Week 1

So, the Scorpions brought the heat and toasted the Sharks in week 1 (2.5 to 1.5). Now, onward to another 9 weeks of top level chess from the Scorpions!

Results were: Barcenilla lost on board 1; Aldama won on board 2; Rensch won on board 3; Gurczak drew on board 4.

Arizona's next game is scheduled for Monday, Aug.30 at 6 p.m. MST. It is with the Seattle Sluggers who went down to defeat against the Chicago Blaze this week (1.5 to 2.5). The Scorpions will need to be cautious and field a strong group of players for the match next Monday. The Sluggers will be anxious to get a win and will be looking to slug our Scorpions right off the boards!

Danny Rensch, of Chess.com fame, will take the game right down to the final minute where he outmaneuvers the Shark and wins - yea! John Gurczak, in his first USCL match and with a rating that is increasing monotonically toward the moon, will play well enough to secure a tie on board 4.

New Season for USCL and Arizona Scorpions

The U.S.Chess League starts its 2010 season on Monday, Aug.23! And the Arizona Scorpions will have their first match against the Miami Sharks on Wednesday, Aug. 25; starting at 6 p.m. MST, live on ICC.

The Scorpions face a tough 10 week schedule this year, including two expansion teams: Los Angeles Vibe and the St. Louis Arch Bishops. And the Arch Bishops feature GMs Hikaru Nakamura and Yury Shulman at the top of the roster! Playing without any GM to top the roster this year, the Scorpions will be looking to sting opponents with their number 3 & 4 boards. With the strong Rensch and Adamson on board 3 and a host of quickly improving youngsters for board 4 (Adelberg, Thompson, Gurczak and Mateer) the outlook for the Scorpions is bright! With a lot of enthusiasm and a little luck the Scorpions could find them selves once again in the Playoffs come November.

Scorpions Set to Sting Seattle Sluggers

The Arizona Scorpions are going for their third win of the Season tonight when they play Seattle on ICC. Hikaru Nakamura will be on board 1 for Seattle and as always will be a formidable opponent! Rogelio Barcenilla will need to pull out all the stops to keep up with him. I'm hoping for a draw here.

On board 2 the Scorpion's Mark Ginsburgh faces Slava Mikhaliuk who is playing White pieces. Slava has been playing well and should give Mark a tough match, so again I see this match ending in a draw.

On board 3 the Scorpion's young Danny Rensch faces the even younger Michael Lee in what should be an exciting match with a few surprises from both sides. This may be the key game that decides if the Scorpions take home a win or just a draw for the match. I predict Danny Wins in an unusual way.

Finally, on board 4 the Scorpion's manager, Leo Martinez, joins in the fun and plays against the Slugger's Joshua Sinanan who is making his premiere appearance of the 2009 season. I expect to see a difficult, maybe positional, battle here with Leo persevering and coming out the winner.

Remember last year in week 4 the Scorpions took the win with 2.5 to 1.5 points. With Alex Shabalov and Jaan Ehlvest leading the Tempo team the match promises to be a struggle - tune in to ICC at 6 p.m. MST to catch all the action.

Scorpions vs Cobras - Who has the Strongest Bite?

Can you believe that it is already week 5? This is the week for the Arizona Scorpions to reach their stride and out-sting the Carolina Cobras!

Those camellian cobras that have switched divisions each of the four years they have played in the league; go figure.

Anyhow, it looks like a great match with all boards very closely rated. The Scorpions move back South to Tucson this week and will be playing from the U of A campus.

Board one is highly leveraged (just like Wall Street)! Lev vs Lev (Altounian vs Milman that is).
I excpect to see some "fighting chess" here given the agressive style of both players.

Board two sees Oleg Zaikov from the Cobras pitted against Mark Ginsburg. Oleg has played in all four Cobra matches this season and is coming off a win over the N.Y. Knight's Justin Sarkar when Cobra shut out the Knights. Mark will have his hands full with Oleg!

Board three features Robby Adamson playing White against Ron Simpson defending for the Cobras. Anyone placing bets on Robby staying out of time trouble or winning in 20 moves or less?
Again, I expect to see an agressive and exciting game with the lead switching back and forth throughout.

On the final board the Scorpion's Warren Harper returns to defend against Craig Jones. Warren is hungry for his first win of the season in this closely rated match. My gut feel is that Warren will triumph this week and be showered with congratulations and well wishes from his teammates then head out to enjoy a "cold one" at the local Wildcat watering hole.

Prediction: Scorpions 3, Cobras 1.

Scorpions Defeat Tennessee in Week 4

Week 4 saw another close win for the Arizona Scorpions! A winning score of 2.5 to 1.5 has given the Scorpions a 2 win - 2 loss record and plump in the middle of the Western Division standings. Very respectable for playing in the league its first year.

It was not an easy win for the team, even though a new Scorpion, Joel Johnson, in his first USCL game made quick duck soup out of his opponent and won in about 20 moves! Was that a King's Gambit against the Tempos? Yea!

The next decisive game saw Jaan Ehlvest of the Tempo defeat Rogelio Barcinella in 41 moves, thereby tieing up the match. Finger nail biting time had arrived!

Mark Ginsburg of the Scorpions played well against a Sicilian Defense by Ron Burnett of Tennessee and had winning chances during the game. After 44 moves and with an unclear game, Mark probably saw Adamson with a pawn advantage, played to a repetition of position and offered a draw which Burnett accepted. Still a tied match with the final board to be the decider. Fingernails are gone, Toebiting time for those flexible people, and Jack Daniel time for the rest of us!

The final board had Tempo's Todd Andrews with White against the Scorpion's Robby Adamson in an equal rated match. Robby played a King Indian type defense against Todd and gained an advantage during the middle game. By move 30 the Endgame had evolved into 2 Rooks for each player, with Robby having a one pawn advantage with 3 pawns. For 39 more moves the pieces danced around the board, thrusting and parrying, as Robby's clock sank lower and lower. Finally, at move 69 [hmmm :-)] with Robby clearly winning and having gained back some time via the 30 sec. move increment, The Scorpion's Bite was too much and Todd resigned.

Scorpions Set to Pick Up the Tempo

Week 4 of the USCL sees the bottom players in the Western Division paired for a challenging chess match. [Can someone tell me how Tennessee and Miami are considered West?]

Last week's 4 to 0 win of Chicago over Tennessee, and the Scorpions 2.5 to 1.5 win over Chicago in week 1 might indicate that the Scorpions have the edge in the match, even with the Tempo's slight rating edge. But wait! This is the USCL where team rosters are shifted each week and strange things can happen at the boards and in CyberSpace.

So let's hang on and see what surprises transpire when the Arizona Scorpions "Pick up the Tempo" and try to toss them all the way back to Tennessee!

Queens Trump the Scorpions in Week 3 of USCL

Ouch, the Arizona team lost its second match in week 3. It looked like the Pioneers had raised Arizona, scraped the desert clean and erected high rises with built in gambling saloons!

First to finish was Mark Ginsburg losing to Alex Lenderman in a one sided game. Mark used the English Opening and hung on in a rather hectic game until surrendering on move 39 with 3 minutes clock time left.

Another Alex! Alex Stripunsky played a closed Ruy Lopez against the Scorpions highest rated player, Rogelio Barcenilla, 2560. Rogelio managed to get a winning position deep into the game, but , alas, lost it and had to draw on move 43. [Score: Scorpions 0.5, Pioneers 1.5].

Board 4 finished next where Scorpion Team Manager, Leo Martinez had White and a 100 point advantage over Ben Katz of the Pioneers. Katz played a Sveshnikov Sicilian and Leo played the Opening well keeping the iniative. But gradually Leo's lead slipped away and Katz took over the advantage. After 44 moves Katz offered a draw; not sure why but maybe he saw the remaining game and was confident the Pioneers had a win even if he drew. [Score: Scorpions 1, Pioneers 2]

Does rating advantage mean anything in this league?? Apparently not in the final game to finish because Danny Rensch of the Scorpions had Black and almost a 200 point advantage over Parker Zhao of the Pioneers. Zhao played the Sicilian defense and the game became rather unfamiliar to a patzer like me. But by move 53 it had turned into a Rook-pawn Endgame with Zhao having a 1 point advantage and some strong central pawns. Danny played on valiantly trying to save a match draw for the Scorpions but Zhao performed well and Danny finally succumed at move 75.

Final Score: Scorpions 1, Pioneers 3.

Scorpions looking for Second USCL Win

On Wednesday evening, September 10, the Arizona Scorpions will play the undefeated Queens Pioneers. The Scorpions will be pursuing their second USCL win from a new location which is in Mesa, Arizona; a suburb of Phoenix.

The Scorpions team composition will also be changed from the previous games. On board 1, Rogelio Barcenilla, with a 2560 rating will have 100+ point disadvantage to his Queens opponent. Whereas, on board 3 Danny Rensch, rated 2411, will have a 200+ point cushion over his opponent!

Boards 2 and 4 are better balanced and have the potential to be the boards where the match gets decided. Mark Ginsburg, with a 2414 rating will play board 2 and will be looking to sting his Pioneer opponent. Leo Martinez, with a 2222 rating will be playing board 4 and trying to prevent his Pioneer opponent from finding any Gold in the Arizona desert.

Go Scorpions! Put those Pioneers on a Stage Coach and send them back to Queens!

Scorpions could not overcome Destiny

Can Destiny be denied? Well it couldn't be done last week when the Arizona Scorpions met the Dallas Destiny. The Destiny emerged with a 3 to 1 score in the match and Arizona fell to 1 win, 1 loss for their first season record.

Destiny struck first in the form of Internet problems in Tucson causing site relocation and a late start for the Scorpions. Board 1 saw two 2500+ rated players, Boskovic and Altounian, be the first players to finish. The game had a Scotch Gambit opening and finished in a draw, leaving it to the three remaining boards to determine the winner of the match.

In an unconventional style game Danny "MacRensch" used the Scotch opening, Mieses variation against Bartholomew. With 13 minutes remaing on his clock and a full piece behind, Danny reluctantly resigned and Destiny took the lead.

The Scorpions hopes rested on Harper and Adamson who had both played the previous week in Arizona's inagural win over Chicago.

Alas, Harper had another bad week and suffered another upset! Playing a Closed Catalan game against the lower rated Zorgit, he struggled to reach the end with at least a draw and keep the Scorpions hopes alive. Finally, with 2 minutes left, Harper resigned and Destiny, not to be denied, had won the match.

Now, the Schneider - Adamson game would not decide the match's outcome, but Robby fought on trying to give Arizona a decent looking final score. Adamson had played a French opening and Schneider deployed the Tarrasch variation. After 37 moves and with 2 minutes left on Adamson's clock, the game ended in a draw.

The McCain Camp, after last week's Spectacular Show and Anointment of Barak Obama, capped by a flawless performance (speech), fell into the abyss of despair.

What to do? What to do? How to win?

The staffers surfed the Internet endlessly for the answer until finally they fell upon the website of a 20 yr. Colorado guy that long ago declared he had found the answer - the Alaskan Governor, Sarah Palin!

But John, incredulous about this selection,wanted some other confirmation. So back to the Internet with the staffers.

Finally, they came across the Quatrains of Nostradamus and in Quatrain 235 found the prediction that a beautiful, vivacious,kick-ass, middle age foxy lady will escort an aged, fading war hero to the throne of world power when the stars are correctly in alignment, similar to that of an elephant with a long tusk.

In quicker than a "New York Minute" John rushed out to the top of Camelback Mountain and in the Phoenix Sky he saw his Elephant. Find me this foxy lady he cried, I don't need any long conversations with her, just one meeting will do.

And next day the old guy hopped onto a silver bird and flew off into the blue yonder, happy as a lark with his newly found Escort.

Arizona Scorpions Sting the Chicago Blaze (2.5 to 1.5)

The Inaugural USCL match for the Arizona Scorpions and Chicago Blaze saw the Scorpions emerging as winners 2.5 to 1.5. The games were played via Internet on ICC and lasted about three hours. Next week the Scorpions will have a major challenge when they confront the Dallas Destiny!

The upset of the match and first game to finish was won by Meerovich over Warren Harper in only 25 moves. A Nimzo-Indian, Open Samisch Defense was used by Harper. His kingside was destroyed with all pieces there being eliminated, leaving the black King defenseless and still on his home square. Harper resigned with 3 minutes left on his clock; Meerovich had 25 minutes left.

Soon after, Arizona jumped back when Robby Adamson won against Burgess in only 26 moves! Burgess played a Sicilian Kan defense but Robby unleashed a nice attack using up all but one minute on his clock. Burgess resigned with a fat 25 minutes left on his.

Not long after midnight EDT, Levon Altounian scored Arizona's second point against Van Der Mortel in a symetrical english, closed system opening. After 42 moves Lev's Queen, Rook and pawn was positioned to finish off Van Der Mortel's lonely, isolated King.

Another Sicilian Kan defense was played by Mark Ginsburg against Pasalic with mixed success. After 24 moves, Mark gave a draw offer which was quickly declined. By move 55 both players were low on time and the game changed into a Blitz Game with time control of 2min/30sec. Pascal needed to win the game to salvage a tie for Chicago in the match.Late into the night the game went, until finally on move 70, 45 minutes past midnight EDT, Pascal offered a draw which Mark quickly accepted; Arizona had won their first USCL chess match!

Now that's what I call "Bringing the Heat and Springing the Sting" Let's make results like this a habit, Scorpions!

ARIZONA SCORPIONS - USCL - READY, SET, GO!

Arizona has joined the U.S. Chess League this year and will play their first game on the Internet Chess Club (ICC) website on Monday, August25 at 6:30 p.m. MST, against the Chicago Blaze.

The Arizona Scorpion Team is well balanced, with several strong players who are very active in Arizona Chess, both adult and scholastic. The team's roster is:

Well the tournament is over and Yelena Dembo had a real struggle. She fell down in the first half and pulled herself back to a 27th. place finish Not good after she was seeded number 6!

The Kosintseva sisters from Russia did very well: Tatiana was first by a good margain and Nadezhda tied for second and ended up ranked third on tiebreaks.

Yikes-Friday the 13th.-gotta be careful today.

I've been working all day on preparing my Federal and State Income Tax return; a real drag of a day. But I gotta get them done by the deadline.

One more day left for the European Women's Individual Championship. Yelena has been making a comeback, but it will still be a disappointing tournament for her. I'll post the "pgn" files for Yelena's games of Rd. 6-11 after the tournament finishes.

The Kosentseva sisters are having a great tournament, holding first and second place right now! Congratulations Tatiana and Nadezhda.
